Student Life

KIA is nurturing and vibrant place that reflects the school’s values of service, perseverance and excellence. KIA students have campus jobs and participate in community service activities. The small founding class at KIA will create clubs, teams and school traditions to help foster the unique culture and sense of community at KIA.

Making a Start

The Academy is initially housed in “McKenna Hall”, a spacious, clean and comfortable building with separate dormitories for boys and girls, housing for dorm parents, and spaces for learning, dining, studying and relaxation. Meals at KIA are balanced, nutritious and primarily locally-grown.

Immersed in Learning

Students who enter KIA will typically have completed grade 9 in the Burundian system.  They will re-enter grade 9 at KIA with an innovative curriculum focused on intensive English instruction and Entrepreneurial Leadership.  This “immersion year” will provide the foundation for students to thrive during their remaining three years at KIA, taking full advantage of the Academy’s unique curriculum, active learning model and English-speaking environment.

Growing for the Future

Construction will begin in 2020 on the Knowledge Commons, an innovative xxx square meter facility that has been designed by an award-wining South African architecture firm. Construction will be completed in time for the 2021 academic year.

Support for the Path Forward

Students will receive college and university counseling throughout their time at KIA. After they graduate, students will continue to receive mentoring, including support for summer internships and career guidance.
