A hallmark of the Academy is its innovative curriculum, which emphasizes outstanding preparation in core academic subjects as well as building critical 21st century skills.

21st Century Skills

KIA students will gain the skills and competencies needed to lead in a complex and changing world: team-work, communication, critical thinking, entrepreneurship and more, along with core subject knowledge.

Languages

English will be the primary language of instruction at KIA.  Students will also learn French and Swahili so that they leave KIA with the language skills needed to navigate as young leaders for East Africa.

Applied Knowledge

KIA will place a special focus on math, science and the use of technology. Instead of rote classroom learning, KIA will use the Village Health Works campus and surrounding community for powerful, real-world applications for learning.

All KIA students will gain hands-on experience as entrepreneurs.  KIA students will launch and operate enterprises, particularly in agriculture, creating a range of new products and services to serve the Academy and broader community.

Imagine learning physics at the VHW hydropower plant, applying chemistry principles in the VHW lab and gaining practical experience collecting and analyzing data with VHW’s Monitoring and Evaluation team.

Preparation for Burundi, and for the World

While KIA’s curriculum is innovative, it will also be mapped to Burundi’s national curriculum standards. Students will gain the subject matter knowledge needed to pass the Burundian national exam at the end of grade 12.
